AI: Business Reporter vs True End-to-End Analyst?

AI will disrupt BI and transform how data is consumed, but there’s an important distinction between an AI Reporter (which retrieves information) vs a true AI Analyst (which analyzes and summarizes).

The table below outlines the key distinctions between these two modes:

AI Reporter (the likely starting point):

• System Inputs: User asks for information → AI translates into SQL queries under the hood
• Data Operations: Filtering and aggregations to retrieve select facts and metrics
• System Outputs: A table, chart, or formatted report

AI Analyst (the transformative future):

• System Inputs: User asks for insights → AI converts to analysis tasks under the hood
• Data Operations: Executes a series of analyses on facts and metrics
• System Outputs: An analysis summary with contextual visualizations

Initially, we’ll likely use AI to mimic and optimize what we already do manually—using AI as an interface to interrogate the data. This is similar to how we build reports or manually extract information from pre-existing reports today, but with the goal of lowering friction for users across the organization.

While AI Reporters will help us get information quickly and easily, BI will be truly disrupted when AI evolves from answering questions to executing analysis, uncovering insights, and guiding decisions.
